Weather
WingWrangler pulls live METAR, TAF, and NOTAM data straight into your scheduling and dispatch workflow. You see conditions before you book. You get warnings when minimums aren’t met.
Weather Data Flow
Section titled “Weather Data Flow”Dashboard Overview
Section titled “Dashboard Overview”Your weather dashboard breaks down what matters: sky condition, visibility, wind, temp/dewpoint spread, and altimeter setting. Everything decoded from the raw METAR.
A report like KOSH 081753Z 27012G18KT 10SM FEW045 SCT250 22/14 A3012 tells you: wind 270 at 12 gusting 18, 10 statute miles visibility, few clouds at 4,500 AGL, scattered at 25,000, temp 22/dewpoint 14, altimeter 30.12. WingWrangler parses all of it and flags what’s relevant to your configured minimums.
| Data | Source | Updates |
|---|---|---|
| METAR | Aviation Weather Center | Hourly (SPECI as conditions change) |
| TAF | Aviation Weather Center | Per issuance schedule |
| NOTAMs | FAA | As issued |
Weather Minimums
Section titled “Weather Minimums”You define the floor. WingWrangler checks every METAR and TAF against your configured minimums and fires a warning when conditions drop below them.
Say your school sets 3 SM visibility and 1,000 ft AGL ceiling as the line. A METAR reports 1 1/2SM OVC008 — that’s 1.5 SM vis with an overcast ceiling at 800 AGL. Both below your minimums. WingWrangler flags it immediately on the schedule and dispatch views.
| Minimum | Example | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Visibility | 3 SM | Warning when reported vis is lower |
| Ceiling | 1000 ft AGL | Warning when ceiling drops below |
| Wind | 20 kts | Warning when sustained wind exceeds |
| Crosswind | 12 kts | Warning when crosswind component exceeds |
Configure these in Settings > Weather Minimums. You can set different minimums per aircraft or per student pilot endorsement level.
Weather Warnings
Section titled “Weather Warnings”WingWrangler checks current METARs and forecast TAFs against your minimums. Green means VFR and above your limits. Yellow means MVFR — marginal, close to the line. Red means IFR or below your configured minimums.
A TAF forecasting FM082000 18015G25KT 2SM -RA BKN010 for your 20:00Z booking? That’s 2 SM in rain with a broken ceiling at 1,000 AGL. If your gust limit is 20 kts, you’ll see red on the schedule before you even get to the airport.
Schedule Integration
Section titled “Schedule Integration”When you create a booking, WingWrangler pulls the current METAR and applicable TAF for the scheduled time. The weather indicator shows up right on the booking — no extra clicks to check conditions.
| Indicator | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Green | VFR — all minimums met |
| Yellow | MVFR — marginal, review conditions |
| Red | IFR/LIFR — below configured minimums |
Data Sources
Section titled “Data Sources”All weather data comes from official FAA and NWS sources. METARs and TAFs from the Aviation Weather Center. NOTAMs from the FAA NOTAM system.
Configuration
Section titled “Configuration”| Setting | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Primary airport | Your home field ICAO identifier (e.g., KOSH). Default weather location for dashboard and dispatch. |
| Visibility minimum | Threshold in SM. Triggers a warning when METAR/TAF visibility drops below. |
| Ceiling minimum | Threshold in feet AGL. Triggers a warning when ceiling drops below. |
| Wind limit | Max sustained wind in knots before warning. |
| Gust limit | Max gust factor in knots before warning. |
| Additional stations | Other ICAO stations to monitor (practice areas, alternate airports). |
